What is a prospective student visit?

Some people refer to it as "shadowing," which is when an incoming student attends classes with an existing student to get a feel for the school, the classes, and student life at Washington High School.

Who can shadow?

Any 8th-grade student who is interested in attending Washington High School. Any 9th-11th-grade student from other districts may request to shadow.

When are Prospective Student Visit Days?

Every Friday there is class from October through December. There may be additional dates available throughout that time period. The goal is to have all prospective students view the school before the applications are due. The application for the Medical Magnet and Open-Enrollment is due December 15

Students may select a FULL-DAY visit (8:40 a.m. to 4 p.m., including lunch), a HALF-DAY MORNING (8:40 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.--periods 1, 2 & 3); or a HALF-DAY AFTERNOON (1:15 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.--periods 5, 6 & 7) What would be the benefit of visiting full-day vs half-day?

Full-day visits are good for students who are coming from private schools with smaller student bodies. It allows the student to get the feel for the larger space and the number of people in the space, particularly during lunch. Half-day visits are good for all students who already kind of know that they want to come to Washington. It's a way for students to dip their toes in without missing a whole day of class.

Who will be my student's ambassador?

Your student's ambassador will be a magnet student in honors and advanced classes in the grade immediately above that of your student, so if your student is a rising freshman, his/her ambassador will be a freshman. This allows your student to see the classes she/he will be in next year.

Prospective students may request a specific student ambassador; however, all of our ambassadors are vetted for behavior, grades, and schedule, so your requested ambassador may not be available. If your requested ambassador is not available, you will be assigned another ambassador with similar interests. As a matter of safety, PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS MUST STAY WITH THEIR ASSIGNED AMBASSADOR.

How do I register for a visit?

Please complete this application and pick your top three dates and times. There is a limit of 10 students per day, but we will make every effort to have your student shadow in one of their top three selections. You will be contacted by Student Management with the date and time of your student's visit, at which point you can make arrangements with your student's school. Please do not assume that you will automatically get your first choice.

Additionally, if your student is staying through lunch, he/she will need to bring either a bagged lunch or money for the cafeteria.

Can my student bring their cell phone?

We would encourage your student to be judicious about their cell phone use during their visit. If you want the student to have the phone on them at all times in case of emergency, we understand. We would request that they not spend their time in class on the phone, as this not only distracts them (and their ambassador) from their purpose here but gives the other students and faculty a bad first impression of your student.

Can my student bring their backpack?

We do not allow backpacks in the classroom. If your student brings a backpack, it will be kept in the Student Management Office for the duration of the visit.

What should my student wear?

There are no uniforms at Washington High School. We encourage our students to dress appropriately for school--no muscle shirts, bare midriffs, short shorts. Jeans and a nice shirt/blouse make a good impression.

What happens after the visit?
